FINDLAY, Ohio, Oct. 5 -- University of Findlay issued the following news release:

The University of Findlay recently was approved by the Ohio Board of Regents and the Higher Learning Commission to offer an online master of science degree in health informatics.

In 2010, the University began offering a graduate certificate in health informatics in response to the growing need for professionals with this type of expertise. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in health informatics and health information management will experience more than 20-percent growth between 2008-2018.

John Richey, director of the health informatics program, says that employment opportunities exist at all experience levels, and jobs are available at a variety of organizations, including acute care hospitals, urgent/ambulatory care centers, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, research facilities, insurance companies, law firms, pharmaceutical companies, electronic health record vendors, consulting firms and educational institutions.

'Health informatics has unlimited potential,' said Andrea Koepke, Ph.

D., dean of the College of Health Professions. 'This program has an interdisciplinary focus addressing the intersection of technology and health care, providing improved, efficient and reliable care for the patient.'

Health informatics is a science that defines how health information is technically captured, transmitted and utilized. Health informatics is considered trans-disciplinary and focuses on information systems, informatics principles and information technology as it is applied to the continuum of health care delivery.

It is an integrated discipline with specialty domains that include management science, management engineering principles, health care delivery and public health, patient safety, information science and computer technology.
